NEWS OF THE MINES

MANAGERS REPORT PROGRESS Alburnia.—The manager reports as follows:—Di'iving hillward has been continued on the footwall branch of the Orlando reef, the distance driven for the * week being 12ft, this making a total dis- £ tance of 1,562 ft from the entrance. The c leader in the face shows a width of Bin, j and we have seen a few colours of gold ( in the ore broken. Both the mineral in £ the quartz and the country rock encasing the reef are most favourable for z, carrying good values. The western cross- - cut has been advanced from the main t level from 52ft to 67ft. The hard bar is still showing in the face. A few days c ago we passed through a 4in leader of }- quartz, and although no gold was seen c it was nice-looking ore. The intermediate level has been driven south a further 7ft, making a total distance of 77ft from the top of the rise. The reef here in the t face shows a width of 2Jft. In breaking f down during the past week colours and £ blotches of gold have been seen, but the c values have not been as good as that previously passed through. We there- j fore propose to rise in the centre of the { run of gold and then carry a stope each way. c Kuranui.—The old battery level drive east of Barry’s reef: I turned this level south to see if there was another branch in the wall, as I did not think the branch we drove on was the same as the winze was sunk on, and at 14ft of driving we cut the other branch, which at present is 15in wide, being a compact body of stone and carrying a fair amount of mineral and silica, and so far looks very well. The country rock is very firm, but is a splendid class for carrying goldbearing reefs, being interlaced with mineral veins and quartz stringers. We are under the winze, and a start will be * made to rise to connect with winze in a j few shifts. Mount Welcome.—The following tele r gram was received yesterday:—3olb stone 1 showing strong gold; looking still good C ahead.’’ c BRADFORD TOPS 1 £ 1 By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright 3 LONDON, Tuesday. £ The Bradford tops market is quiet. f Topmakers are making small conces- 1 sions for actual business.—A. and N.Z.
