Several squads of po-- ach composed of 30 constables, were ordered out to arrest all the known “gangsters” and underworld criminals. On hearing this the criminal gangs threatened “to shoot up the police.” Rumours were also circulated that gunmen had been brought in from the neighbouring cities, in particular St. Louis, to augment the forces. In a certain ward, where the leaders had planned to coerce the voters, an altercation arose with a detective who had apprehended a gunman. As a result tile detective was shot dead. The solicitors for the arrested men in every case immediately obtained writs of habeas corpus, and secured their rele^s^. —A. and N.Z.
