SHEER LUCK
Winning the Art Union ONE IN 125,000 FATE SMILES O NYOUNG MAN One in 125,000. That was Mr. H. Munro-Clark’s chance of winning the £ 2,000 “Now or Never” art union. And he did. Fate was particularly kind. She saw to it that he received another £SOO as the seller of the winning ticket. Has Mr. Munro-Clark decided to celebrate the occasion as most young men would ? Not he. He is a sensible young man of 25 who has just accepted a good job. The money will be invested and Mr. Munro-Clark will go on working. This lucky man seems to like work —he worked until the early hours of this morning, completing business connected with the art union. When Mr. Munro-Clark bought his ticekt he selected it by chance from three sacks full. He signed it “H. Munro” for no reason at all. Even when the winning ticket was drawn Mr. Munro-Clark did not even hear the name “H. Munro” called. It was not until three o’clock yesterday afternoon that it was discovered that the book containing the winning ticekt had been sold in the office. He then went home, looked at his ickets, and saw thjit he was the winner. “It was just sheer luck,” said Mr. W. G. Compton, organiser of the art union, to-day. He went on to say that the book which Mr. Munro-Clark had bought was one that had been returned from Nlr. Coates, the Rotorua agent. The winner had nothing to
do with the drawing of the tickets. The winning number was drawn from a bag by Detective Sullivan while Mr. Munro-Clark was busily working in another part of the building. Just between ourselves, he was too busy to notice anything, as he had just received an emhpatic “hurry-up” message from Mr. Compton, in whose office he has been working for some time. The whole drawing of the art union was under the supervision of the police and Mr. P. J. Kellehcr. of the Department of Internal Affairs.
