RIGOROUS CLEAN-UP
FOREIGN VOLUNTEERS’ RAID ARMS AND MUNITIONS SEIZED By Cable. Press Association.—Copyright SHANGHAI, Monday. A force of volunteer; and police was mobilised to-day, and surrounded and raided a notorious block of houses on the waterfront in the Honkew district of Shanghai. This force, 1,000 Urong, was under an American volunteer officer. The men were ordered not to allow anyone to escape. They were told to use their rifle butts first, then their bayonets, but there was to be no shooting unless it was definitely ordered. When the doors were not opened to the police, they hammered their way into the houses, or gained entry by means of fire brigade ladders. There was great excitement among the Chinese crowd. The was stated to he part of a programme for the rigorous clean, ing up of the International Settlement preparatory to advancing the military defence lines into Chinese territory.—: Sun.
