ONSLOW HANDICAP FIELD TWO TARANAKI REPRESENTATIVES They are only an average lot of two-year-olds l.li (it Air. McManemin was called upon to handicap for the Onslow Stakes, to be run at Ellerslie on Saturday week, and in consequence he has had to start rather high up. Silvermine, the youngster out of Silver Link, is on top with 9.0, And the colt is asked to concede the consistent Melissa a couple of pounds. These babies have met only once, and that was at the Taranaki meeting two months ago, the colt having 9.1 and Melissa 5.3. and the latter won, finishing a half-length in front of Silvermine, Babv Bun splitting the pair. The colt two days later ran The Hawk to a head in the Taranaki Stakes, while Miss Pat. receiving 21b. beat Melissa (5.9) by two lengths in the youngsters' race. Both Melissa and Silvermine have gone on the right way since then, and Mr McManemin, going by the book, appears to have brought them pretty well together. The colt is more up to weight than Melissa, and for that reason he would be, preferred, but it is quite on the cards that he will contest the Champagne Stakes. That the Onslow Stakes is a weak field is revealed bv the fact that at Trentham last month, in a similar event, both Thaw and .Melissa were beaten out of a place with 8.5 each, and next week they have been allocated 8.11 and 5.1respectively. Most of the good two-year-olds will be engaged in the Champagne Stakes on the opening day.
