TROTTING

Showing Form Roy Berry is slipping plenty of work into Patsy Shegan, and the pacer should strip well at Easter. Recent form suggests that “Patsy” will be a tough proposition in the Champion Stakes, Change of Quarters As Becky Logan’s name appears among the list of the nominations for the Easter meeting at Addington, it would appear as if there was some truth in the statement that she was to join one of the New Brighton trainers’ establishments. Selecting Well Backers showed good judgment at Ashburton races on Saturday, for in the Selma Trot the three placed horses were backed in that order. However in the Rakaia Handicap, the other light harness event on the day, the fifth favourite, Amazon, raced the favourite home. One From Auckland The Harold Dillon Alice Wood trotter Sebisca, who was at one time owned and trained in Canterbury, but who is now owned and trained in Auckland, has been accorded a nomination In the unhoppled trotters’ events at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's Easter meeting. In Strong Company Sebisca a few seasons ago was a useful performer, but went amiss and received a lengthy spell. At the Otahuhu and Waikato meetings he threatened to stage a come-back and notched minor placings. His nomination at the New Zealand Metropolitan meeting is somewhat of a surprise, for the class he is likely to meet there should prove much too strong. Likes a Loiter When Harold Burwood raced in Auckland he failed to please, and though he has dene better over recent months he canned be looked upon as anything better than a third rater. He has time and performances against him which warrants placing him in select company, and as he has a habit of taking a rest during a race he is frequently well beaten. Possessing Speed That good pacing mare, Bessie Logan, has not taken any harm from the severe racing she has had this season, and is credited with being in tip-top condition, and one likely to be returned a winner at Easter. There Is no doubting Bessie Logan’s brilliancy, but like other good ones she is ©n a hard mark, and what victories that may come her way will not be easily achieved. On The Easy List J. Shaw is not doing very much with his team at present, but will commence to send them along In earnest in a week or so. The much improved pacer Jewell Pointer is having an easy time, and after his great showings over the past couple of months fully deserves the leisure hours that come his way. The pacer Great Audo, though his recent displays have not been encouraging. should develop as he matures and obtains; the necessary experience. Rockburn is looking well, t)u , A maria, as previously reported, is still on the sick list with an injured knee. The latest addition to J. Shaw’s team Direct Morning, is performing useful work, although he will have to show better form to keep pace with nis stablemates. Trainers Complain*

*S' l J* are com P la ining about the attitude adopted by the caretaker Alexandra Park in harrowing the dirt training track between the hours of eight and nine each morning. Work at that time is generally in full swing, and it is not very comfortable to have to steer round a motor-tractor dragging a set of harrows, more particularly If one is driving a fractious horse. Then at this time of the year a numl»er of juveniles are receiving a preparation. and trainers are not prepared to take the risk and send them along while harrowing is in progress. The attention paid to the track is appreciated by trainers, and they consider that the caretaker does his best to keep things in good order for their benefit, but the suggestion is offered that the training track be closed earlier each day and the harrowing be done in the afternoon. Good Talent Engaged Great nominations have been received for the Easter meeting of the New Zealand Metropolitan Club. Most of the cracks of both gaits have been accorded entry, as the following will show: In the pacing division are such wellknown performers as Great Bingen, Talaro, Waitaki Girl, Logan Lou, Tom Thumb. Loganwood, Logan Chief, Native Chief, Locanda Mac, Black Ad-

miral. Jack Potts, Holly Boy, Peter Bingen, Cardinal Logan, Trenand, Golden Devon, Bonny Logan, St. Maura, Sheik, Acron, Sea Pearl, Talent and Silk Thread, while Escapade, Elzear, Peter Swift, Le Todd, Guy Parrish, Charles Dixie, Bonny Spec, Nighborn, Rose Bingen, Napland, John Mauritius, Our Lady, and Audominion are engaged in the unhoppled events. Very few North Island-owned and trained horses figure in the list of nominations at the meeting. There are plenty eligible for the classes, but it is quite apparent that many owners prefer to remain at home, than to incur the heavy expenses of travelling. A New Classic

It is very unfortunate that classic events in the light harness game are not so freely patronised as in the sister sport. These events for either trotter or pacer have not received the consideration deserved from owners, for the rich stakes they carry are apparently not wanted. With only four competitors in the 1927 New Zealand Trotting Stakes the Forbury Park Club a month or so ago decided that it would be advisable to delete that race from their programme. However, the Canterbury Owners, Breeders and Trainers’ Association, in conjunction with the Forbury Park Club, have decided on replacing the New Zealand Trotting Stakes with a mile and a-half event styled the New Zealand Sires Produce Trotting Stakes, which, like the firstnamed event, is confined to unhoppled trotters. The race carries a stake of £350 and the Gore Memorial Cup, valued at £25. Conditions do not warrant penalties or allowances for any of the three-year-olds and a standing start will be adopted. Nominations are as follows: —Nominations for living stallions, ssovs. each, payable by owners, close at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 22, 1927. Nominations, 2sovs. each, for present two-year-olds, close at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 6, 1927. The progeny of defunct stallions at date of nomination are eligible for entry without payment of stallion’s fees. Great Peter Goes South Auckland’s crack three-year-old pacer, Great Peter, was sent South last evening on the second express to contest the Champion Stakes at the N.Z. Metropolitan meeting. As the Champion Stakes is run on the second day of the meeting, April 18, Great Peter will have plenty of time to recover from the trip. Trainer J. T. Paul, who will drive Great Peter, when approached last evening stated that the reason why his charge did not do so well on the Thames visit was on account of his developing a cold. In the interim Great Peter has done well, and tucked in his box munching carrots looked in great order. Much interest will centre in Great Peter’s meeting with the crack three-year-olds of New Zealand, and Aucklanders will be very disappointed if he fails to uphold his reputation.
