MOUNT EDEN BOROUGH
MEETING OF COUNCIL The ordinary meeting of the Mount Eden Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor, Mr. E. H. Potter, presiding. A recommendation from the Works Committee that Messrs J. J. Craig’s quotation of £1,700 for formation and provision of two-inch Laykold concrete on Bellwood Avenue be accepted was adopted. Other recommendations in connection with the report were also adopted. The foreman reported that the building of rockeries and forming of paths on Mount Eden round the newlyerected tea kiosk was now in hand. It was decided to have the opening ceremony on Saturday, April 9, when residents of Mount Eden and Auckland would be invited. In connection with an appeal for contributions towards an effort to raise £3,500 towards installing a wireless outfit at the hospital, it was stated that the council’s annual contribution to the public hospital fund now exceeded £5,000. It was thought that the £5,000 covered any additional requirements. The Mount Albert Borough Council notified that it was prepared to contribute half the cost of the work done in Raleigh Street, on which their boundary abuts. This offer was accepted with thanks. Financial Position Commenting on the financial position of the council the mayor said that the year had been most satisfactory and their balance at the bank was well in credit. A Dangerous Bridge The Railway Engineer forwarded a plan showing how the bridge on Mount Eden could be widened out to the line of the existing kerb. The cost would be £l4O, and the council would be asked to meet half the cost. Councillors commented strongly, stating that the bridge was an extremely dangerous one. Trams passed over the bridge and thte railway went underneath and the traffic was very
heavy, so the sooner it was completed the better. Other Business .The inspector reported that 51 building permits for buildings of a total value of £13,831 were issued during March. A petition from ratepayers on St.
Leonard’s Road protesting against the City Council’s action in turning water from the portion of street under ,jts authority on to private property, and from the vicinity of the pumping station through various properties by an open drain, was discussed. The water which came down the open drain was often impure owing to the city sewerage pipe overflowing. The question was referred to the Works Committee.
