In days when grandma was a child A young girl going a way to spend A few days with a distant friend Would travel on a coach high-piled With bag and baggage, trunk and grip. And what a tedious journey then By rocky road and muddy glen To frolic at a week-end trip! But now a racing motor-car. Resplendent in the latest mode. Swift-rolling over concrete road, Will bear the week-end guest afar, And for her luggage, just a small Black bag containing one da>nce frock A bathing-suit, a golfing smock, Tooth brush and powder puff—that’s all. FIRES IN CARS AUCKLANDER’S EXPERIENCE Some time ago “The Sun,” Christchurch, published a news item concerning a fire which occurred on the front seat of the car of Mr. H. A. Young, S.M. The car caught fire in a garage and the outbreak was unaccountable. Mr. Young has received the following letter from an Auckland resident: “Having read of your car catching fire in the garage, I thought you might be interested in an experience I had recently. While out for a run in ttie suburbs where the roads are rough, the front seat caught fire from underneath, or rather was smouldering when discovered. No one was smoking", the car had not been left, and it was not an electrical fire. It occurred around the top of one of the springs and burnt a hole right through the seat under a passenger. I. cannot account for it in any other way except the constant friction of the spring Had the car been garaged in this condition a fire must have resulted. It occurred to me that your second fire may have had a similar origin, and that you might like to know of my experience.”
