EDUCATING THE PEOPLE A BIG CONFERENCE “Let us deevlop the resources of our land, call forth its powers, build up its institutions, promote all its great interests, to see whether we also, in our day and generation, may not perform something to be remembered.” This quotation from Daniel Webster puts in a nutshell the aims and objects of the largest conference ever held in New Zealand on the question of land settlement. The conference will be held in the Auckland Town Hall on April 13 under the auspices of'the newly-formed New Zealand Land Settlement and Development League. General Sir Andrew Russell will preside, and it is expected that about 500 delegates will be present. Over 20 special committees will be set up to investigate every phase of agricultural deevlopment. “The league has no political leanings whatever,” said the secretary, Mr. N. G. Gribble, in discussing the policy to be pursued. “We recognise the seriousness of the land settlement problem and that the time has arrived when some organisation should be formed for the stimulation of primary production. A meeting of the league committee was held yesterday, when preliminary arrangements for the conference were made. Letters were read from the Prime Minister and seevral Cabinet Ministers expressing appreciation of the movement. The Auckland City Council, the Auckland Power Board and other local bodies are co-operating with the league in the entertainment of visiting delegates, -
