THE SAMOA TIMES. "Sworn to no Master of no Sect am I." SATURDAY, JUNE 11, 1881.

Divine Service.—The Rev. Dr. George J Turner will (D.V.) hold divine service in ho Foreign Church, Apia, to-morrow [Sunday), at 10 a.m. Municipal Board.— Tho Municipal Board met at the Court-house on Tuesday For tho despatch of ordinary business. Tenders for fencing the jail grounds and for the erection of closets for the use of the prisoners were opened. Mr. Miller's tender of SICO was accepted. —lt was resolved to erect a new bridge over the creek which intersects the Cemetery road, the old bridge having broken down ; ami also to improve said road.—The dancing license was again under discussion. This impost is strongly objected to by several ratepayers, and as"it is doubtful whothei tho Municipal Board has any authority to levy fees for licenses,"it might be well for tho Board, in the interests of peace and quiet, and for the welfare of the Municipality, to aijain take this subject into consideration at their next meeting with a view to the repeal of Regulation CVI. Wo do not urge that because a tax is unpopular that it should be abolished, but it is the last straw which bleaks the camel's back, and the position of the Municipality renders it advisable for llie governing bodv to temper valour witli flismvtinn

Tin: Roads.—Tho Municipal Board, at least tliut portion of it whoso special province it is to attend to the pulilic thoroughfares, stieui to bo rather unfortunate in thi'ir management of llio roads. Subsequent to the beginning of tin- pre-! sent year we took occasion to call the attention of the Board to the unsightly j and unhealthy state of the open hmd-.j bordering on the roads from the dense' growth of weeds thereon, and also to the necessity for t.lie roads getting some little attention in tho way of repair. For a considerable time, and during that, period of the year when the repairing and formation of roads can ho best effected in this climate, nothing was done. lint as soon as tho dry season had set in the road inspectors suddenly woko up, put on j half-a-dozen prisoners who, under the charge of a policeman, transferred the firm thoroughfares into shifting sandbeds, along which the hapless pedestrian has to shuttle painfully. We do not desiro to be hyper-critical, but it i-- reasonable for citizens to expect, and they have ;i right to demand, that their comfort and convenience will he somewhat respected by the Board. Wo would now beg to call the attention of the road inspectors to the dangerous condition of several cocoa-nut trees which overhang Beach Street. It has been represented to us that several residents have lately had narrow escapes from severe injury from fronds and nuts falling on to the footI path from some of the overhanging trees. I [Since writing the above we observe that '. an effort is being made by the Board to render the road near the Mnlivai bridge somewhat more passable.

Jlystep.ioi.'s Death. A death of rather a mysterious nature is reported from VolU'lc. On Monday, a Chinaman, accompanied by hi* half-caste daughter, loft his home near Vailele and proceeded inland on n pigeon-shooting expedition. On reaching the shooting ground the I sportsman requested his daughter to roI main stationary while he went further a-field in search of the game. The girl waited patiently for several hours, but i as her father did not return she retraced ! her steps homeward, reaching the coast ; ahout dusk. Having told her story to some other Chinamen who live at Yailele, and as the missing man did not return over-night, a search party was formed next morning. This party scoured the I bush in the neighbourhood of the spot where the man had been shooting, and at! last he'was found in a recumbent position, i life being extinct. The deceased had resided for a number of years on these islands ami was old and feeble. Apia CItICKKT CLUB.—A special meeting of the committee of The Apia Cricket Clid) was held at the International Hotel on Wednesday evening. The President of the Club, J. H. Graves, Esq., H.B,M. Consul, occupied the Chair. Minutes of I the previous meeting were road and adopted. The Secretary bunded in a list of the names of gentlemen who were desirous of being admitted moodier*. The Ground Committeo reported that they bad visit,d reveral plots of land near town. They , had now in view a block at Sogi, the j property of Mr. Morris Sjnnlun, which I would make a very suitable ground. The owner of this section was daily expected ] in Apia, and the sub-committee hoped to I be able to report on what terms the laud could be leased at next meeting of the! general committee. On th.< motion of i the President it was resolved that the club be called "The Apia Cricket and Lawn Tennis Club." The Secretary was authorised to procure tbo necessary material for the game of lawn tennis. Wednesday of each week, was fixed on as a special day for practice, the members to arrange among themselves the hour for assembling on the Held. It was arranged 1 to play an alphabetical match—A to L, 1 and Mto Z—on Midsummer-day, 3-lth ' iust. Sav.ui.—A correspondent sends us the 1 following items:—Early on the morning ' of Saturday, 4th inst., two men of Sale- . lavalu, in Ivu, while fishing on the reel I eaiiie on the dead body of a Tnpitoitcau, f also of Salelavalu. Shortly afterwards > they picked up the canoe, belonging to ! this man, the outrigger of which was > broken. It is not known how the poor fellow eauii 1 \ his death, but it is tho a:;ht 1 that be had ventured too near the edge of J the reef with bis frail bark and had been •s struck by a breaker. The Itu-o-tane 1 have again promised Safotulafai to rer main neutral during the present war.

Aru C'EMKTERY. —A correspondent, iu a letter published in this issue, draws attention to the sad state of neglect into which our burying-ground has fallen. Wo understand the Committee visited the cemetery in the early part of the week with the view of commencing operations for its improvement. We hope soon to be able to report that considerable progress has been made in laying out and otherwise patting in a ilcent .state the place which, our correspondent hints, may be the "long home" of any of us now resident in Apia. EIiUATa. —In 11 local in our issue of '2Bth ulto., under the side-head P.M.iH.'i, we stated that Rev. T. Powell, Faloaiili, was " an Associate of tho Virginia lnsti- : tnte." We should have written "Victoria I Institute." In the article on pafolo from I the pen of the revd. geiitli man referred I to above, published in our issue of the i 25th ulto, 011 col. "J. second last line, before j "discharge" read "the." Col. 5 par. :.' 1 1. ID " Aliglia " should be " Aijluia"
