A DETECTIVE'S HOLIDAY.
THEFT ON LINER. Inspector Goiigh, Of Scotland Yard. CRIME ON RANGITANE. Press Association— -Copyright Wellington, August 31. While the liner Rangitane was outward bound from London to Wellington and passengers were at dinner thieves broke into the purser's office and forced the safe. They stole property amounting to several hundreds-of pounds and escaped unseen, but they reckoned without exChief Inspector W. C. Gough, of Scotlaud Yard, who was taking a holiday trip on the Rangitane. When the robbery became known some of the passengers scoffed and said: "What? We have a celebrated detective in our midst and yet this sort of thing goes on. Surely he can do something about it." But the C.I.D. man went quietly to work and as a result of his investigations before the voyage ended the missing property was recovered almost intact, while two suspected persons were arrested by the police when the liner berthed at Wellington to-day. Later they were charged with the theft of £7lO. the property of the New Zealand Shipping Company. Such was the detective's holiday trip. He made light of it when interviewed to-day. He stated that at first the problem had appeared difficult, but his methods had eventually proved successful. The main task always in such a case was not so much discovering the culprit as establishing proof of guilt.
