JAPAN ABSENT.

MELBOURNE WOOL SALE'S

Press Association —Copyright. Melbourne, June 12

Japanese woolbuyers did not bid for any wool at the Melbourne wool sales, which opened this afternoon. It was frankly admitted by the representatives of Japanese firms in Melbourne that this action was in retaliation for the recent tariff alterations affecting Japanese imports into Australia. The present sales will last for two days, and 10,500 bales will he offered. There was a notable increase in French competition, and there was also good competition from Yorkshire and local mills. Considering the poorness of the selection, the sales passed off to good competition. Withdrawals were frequent, but they were due chiefly to owners’ reserves. !t, was not possible to make quotations on such a miscellaneous selection, but the tendency of the market for fleece wools was, if anything, easier. Crutchings, which constituted the bulk of the offerings, were however fully firm on the last Geelong sales.
