Steamer Kalingo Stranded In South.

Press Association —Copyright, Greymouth, May 24,

The steamer Kalingo when entering port this morning shortly after midnight was carried against the south training wall, remaining fast for 15 minutes when she was released and proceeded to berthage, tying up at 12.30 o’clock. A fresh north-east wind combined with a considerable south-westerly swell and a slight tide gave the vessel a sheer after she crossed the bar and she refused to answer the helm.

While stranded she was pounded by seas but the masterly skill of Captain C. W. Ostenfeld saw the vessel moved clear. She was drawing Oft. at the bow and lift, at the stern.

The extent of the damage has not yet been fully ascertained. It is confined chiefly to the forward compartment. The starboard plate was split for six inches. Leakage into the forward bilge was easily coped with.
