DRUNK IN TRUCK.

“Not Fit To Be Gn RoaJ. ?? COLLISION AT NEWMARKET. Press Association —Copyright. Auckland, To-day. Remarking that he was not fit to use the road at ail, Mr. F, K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court to-day, in addition to fining Ditler Gothard Monrad, a farmer, aged 43, £lO, or one month’s imprisonment, for being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor-truck in Broadway, Newmarket, the previous night, made an order that no license was to be issued to him for six months.

Monrad pleaded guilty. Sub-Inspoctor Fox said that Monrad was driving a motor-truck from Par nell to Newmarket at 8.15 on Friday evening, and when in Broadway his vehicle collided with a parked car, striking it a glancing blow. The truck then mounted the footpath, struck an excavation work and then hit the side of the overhead railway bridge. Monrad got out of the truck, and it was observed that he was staggering. The driverless truck ran backwards and crashed into another parked car. Both cars were damaged, the extent of which could not yet bo estimated. “Monrad was arrested and was found to be drunk,” said Mr. Fox. “Dr. Lamb examined him and certified that he was intoxicated and unfit to be in charge of a motor vehicle. This man comes from Paeroa and drove to the city in the truck which is owned by his wife. He has no license, but says h© intended to take one out before returning to the country. He has never been in trouble previously. He states further that on Friday he had'a cold and took two or three brandies in an endeavour to recover.”
