Julian Cup Games. STRATFORD GOES DOWN TO THISTLE. , *“'• ■ ■ : ' ... ■• - ' • ’•; Stratford suffered Its first defeat for the past two years In the Julian Cup game , against Thistle on Saturday. With several new 'players in its ranks the team failed to show its usual combination, and during most of the game Thistle had the upper hand. Profiting by .Stratford’s mistakes and certain weaknesses in their defence, the New Plymouth team piled up a lead of four goals by half-time. Beckett, the Thistle centre-forward, was particularly dangerous throughoui the spell, and he had the Stratford goalie sadly bustled. Thistle’s first score came when R Rae passed to J. Hill, who shot well and found the goalie too slow. Henderson later goaled with a corn oi Iriek awarded for an infringement in front of Strafford’s goal.

Beckett scored with a neat shot ■ from close in shortly afterwards, and after a season of up-and-down play intercepted the ball as tjie Stratford goalie kicked it out and netted another fine goal. I i SOUTHERN RESULTS, Hawera retained its unbeater record in this year’s Julian Cup competition, defeating Hawera A by four goals to two. In the other match, Manaia defeat ed Auroa by three goals to two. The Auroa B team’s withdrawal from the competition has eliminated the bye in the Southern Division.
