Mr. and Mrs. Hawkes, who are leaving the district on transfer, were farewelled by the pupils of the Ngaere School and their parents at a social afternoon on Friday. Constable W. Hughes will be officer in charge of the Stratford Police Station for the next fortnight, during which Sergeant C. M. Anniss is on' li ave. 1
Mr. W. J. Poison, M.P., arrived at Stratford at midday, on Saturday to spend the week-end in his constituency. He returned to Wellington today.
Mr. C. R. F. Tilley, the newly appointed secretary of the Stratford Racing Club, was a visitor to the Hawera races on Saturday. It is understood he will arrive at Stratford next Monday to take up his duties.
Tributes to the work of the president and secretary, Messrs. T. T. Murray and H. A. Hunt, were paid at the annual meeting of the Stratford branch of the Farmers’ Union on Saturday. Both were re-elected for thei ensuing year.
Presentations of a crystal bowl to the president, Mrs. Cocker, and a suitcase to the secretary, Mrs. Young, were made at the annual meeting of the Central of the Division of tfft rmers ’ Union c;n Saturday. . r
Tributes to the work of Miss E. Buist and Mr. R. Syme, club captain of tli 3 Mount Egmont Alpine Club, in the interests of mountaineering, were paid on Friday night at a gathering organised by the club in honour of the forthcoming marriage of the two members. More than 100 people attended, there being representatives of all the Taranaki alpine clubs. Many apologies were received. Miss Buist and Mr. Syme were presented with a chiming clock by the dub. ■! j
