CORONATION POMP

CEREMONY IN 1937. MR. BALDWIN’S STATEMENT. No Day Of Mourning For Funeral. KING EDWARD'S WISHES Press Association —Conyright. Received 11 a.rn. To-day. London, Jan. 23. Early in his speech in the House of Commons, the Prime Minister, Mr. Stanley Baldwin, announced that the 1 Coronation of King Edward VIII would be held with appropriate pomp and ceremony in 1937. It is officially announced that.the King does not desire the proclaiming of Tuesday as a day of mourning, as he feels the suspension of business activity will cause widespread hardship, and loss. .

His Majesty wishes the people of Britain to mark the solemnity of the late King’s funeral in such manner as each think appropriate. His Majesty knows well that the late King will be constantly in the thoughts of the people throughout the day. His Majesty’s Ministers suggest the observance of two minutes’ silence during the funeral service at Windsor, the exact time being announced to-morrow. The Stock Exchange is closing on Tuesday. ARRANGEMENTS TO SUIT COLONIES. Press Association —Copyright London, Jan. 22. Inquiries in authoritative quarters reveal that the interests of the Dominions, of India and the Colonies are being considered in connection with the Coronation, which may be fixed for a time to suit overseas visitors, and when the weather is likely to be most favourable. Consequently, if it cannot be held by October, it will possibly be deferred until the summer of 1937. It is believed a long delay is not favoured, especially as King Edward has already varied precedents. The Sun-Herald service is informed there will be no presentations at Court in 1938. Debutantes will have to await the summer of 1937, but many features of London’s summer season will not be disturbed, as in 1910. when the Derby, Ascot and the opera were held, though less elaborately. The Sun-Herald understands that it is most improbable that a member of the Royal Family will visit South Australia for its centenary.
