Mathieson, the New Zealand swimmer, broke the Australian 400 metres’ backstroke record by 30 seconds in smin 41 3-ssec, thus defeating Noel Ryan, British Empire champion, and Herford, the Australian halfchampion. Walter Jarvis, the New Zealander, won the Victorian 100 yards freestyle championship in 54sec from the Queensland champion, Trimble, and the Victor in champion, Crawford.
