ST. ANDREW'S CHRYSANTHE- " MUM DISPLAY

A large attendance favoured both the afternoon and evening sessions of the St. Andrew’s Chrysanthemum Show yesterday. Tire show was officially declared open by the Mayor, Mr. J. W. McMillan, who said it was pleasing to see such a fine array of flowers and such a good attendance. He congratulated the organisers on their success, remarking that the preparations for such an event entailed hard work and occupied a great deal of time. His congratulations were o|.(tended also to the exhibitors who made the show possible. To produce such perfection in blooms required expert knowledge and a natural bent. The St. Andrew’s Church, he added, were to be commended on such a praisewor thy effort. Outstanding as an attraction to the exhibition was the baby show in which a very large number of babes was entered. This phase of the show was commenced as a side feature and added attraction to the flower show, but it proved such a popular section that it ranked yesterday as one of the major features of the exhibition. were:— Under three months: Baby Wickstead 1, Baby Shaw 2; three to six months, Wheeler twins 1, Baby West 2; six to 12 months, Baby Lay 1. Baby Morgan 2. Twelve to 18 months: Baby White 1, Baby Kerr 2. Special for best all round baby; Baby Keith. Brisk business was done at the various stalls, which though laden with produce early in the day, had a lean and empty appearance in the evening. Stallholders were; Produce, Mr M. T. Phillips and Mesdames A. Lilley and W. A. Wiggins; sweets, Misses A. Savage, R. Taylor and P. Brown; dames P. T. Aitken, A. Wendleborn and J. Grierson: cakes, Mesdames I. Bryce and J. Savage and Miss M. Thompson; faneywork, Mrs M. T. Phillips; vegetables, Mr. F. Hunger; cooking, Miss M. Phillips.. In the evening a short play was given by Miss M. Smart and Miss M. Phillips and Messrs D. Thomson and R, Hutchings. A “broadcasting” item was tendered by Mrs M. T. Phillips and Miss R. Hutchings and Messrs. D. Thomson and R- Hutchings.
