TOLPUDDLE MARTYRS
CEREMONY IN ENGLAND—SOIL TAKEN FROM CANADA,
VANCOUVER April 20. Soil from Canada has been placed on the grave in England of ono of the first trade unionists, in the village of Tolpuddle. The soil, taken from the grave of George Loveless, in London, Ontario was sprinkled on the grave of William Hammett by the general secretary of the National Union of Railwayman.
The ceremony recalled how G farm labourers, in 1834, were transported to the convict settlement in Australia for their attempt to form a trade union. Some years later they were pardoned. Loveless, one of the -six, 'went to Canada. Hammett is the only, one buried in Tolpuddle. *
