RUGBY COMPETITION IN TARANAKI
SENIOR TEAMS PLAY THEIR FIRST MATCHES I \ STRATFORD WIN GAME AGAINST CLIFTON ELTHAM BEAT LAST YEAR'S CHAMPION TEAM The 1935 senior Rugby tea ms* competition opened on Saturday under poor weather conditions. The surprise of the day was Eltham's defeat of last year's champion team, Patea. Stratford won with a comfortable margin from Clifton in a game at Victoria Park, the state of which, as a result of rain, prevented bright play. United Old Boys were narrowly defeated at Hawera by Hawera by nine points to six. The scoring was close in every game, except those in which Okaiawa defeated Athletic by 14 to 5 and Old Boys beat Star 13to 5. Tukapa just got home with a three-point: margin over Opunake and Kaponga battled to a narrow victory over Inglewood. . Conditions were against good play, but the games gave sufficient indication of a greater keenness and fitness this season, with a resultant improvement in the standard of play.
The scoreboard: —
