PLUNKET SHIELD GAMES

OTAGO-AUCKLAND MATCH Press Association.— rnr&rizht. Auckland, Jan. 2. The Plunket Shield match between Otago and Auckland was continued at Eden Park to-day under ideal conditions, the home side improving on its position j after the first two days' play and now having great prospects of an outright | win. Auckland's second innings realised 330 runs and Otago was faced with 381 runs to make to win. The visiting team failed in the second innings and at stumps had lost five wickets for 136 runs, with the leading batsmen dismissed. The holders of the shield will have to stage a remarkable recovery to win the match. The scores are:— Auckland. First innings 263 Second Innings. J. E. Mills, b Elmes 46 P. E. As a result of to-day's play .in the Canterbury-Wellington Plunket Shield cricket match Canterbury requires 181 Tuns to win. As Canterbury has five ..ickets in hand the position is interesting. In the first innings Wellington made 328 runs, to which Canterbury replied with 424. Wellington's second innings was resumed to-day, when the score reached 391, and the South Island team had put on J. 15 for the loss of five wickets when stumps were drawn at the end of the third day's play. Considering the bad start made by Wellington in its second innings the ! team did remarkably well to finish with I 391 runs, in compiling which Morgan, j Jamesj Tindill, Lamason and Ell figured j prominently, all reaching or passing the half-century. j Canterbury also made a disastrous start | in the second innings, first wicket ! (Kerr's) falling before the side had scor- ] ed, the second when the total had reach- j ed 21, arid the third at 56. Canterbury was in a parlous position when the fourth wicket fell at 88. The score v/as | carried to 113, however,, before the fifth i wicket was captured, and now Canter- I ury has a fighting chance to win. Play generally to-day was bright, although the fielding did not show any appreciable improvement on Monday's. One of the highlights of the day, and indeed of the series so far, was a magni- I ficent catch by Ward which dismissed', Cromb. Several experienced cricketers | remarked after the match that they had had never seen better. j Details are:— !
