BARRICADE ON ROAD

IRRESPONSIBLE PERSON'S ACT

Whangarei, Jan. 1. What appears to be the work of some irresponsible person last night in blocking portions of the road, on the Awarua Hill, near the Awarua store on the Whangarei-Kaikohe main road, nugnt easily have resulted in tragedy. When driving his service motor-bus early this morning Mr. W. Webb was surprised to find, on rounding a corner on the Awarua Hill a barricade of large stones erected right across the road. Fortunately he was able to stop the vehicle just in time. ,A bout two chamS further on another obstacle was encountered This was a konaki, or sledge, approximately Bft. to 10ft, long, which was placed across the road, boards also being used to complete the barricade. Mr Webb states that the stones were so large that, if they were struck by a car travelling at a fair speed, the car would certainly be overturned, as the stones were higher than the axle of a car The point at which the obstruction were placed on the hill had a drop on one side of over 20ft., and on the other side there was a steep bank.
