SCOTTISH exchange papers indicate that a considerable expansion has taken place in the past three years or so in the trade between Australia and New Zealand and the Clyde, and the commerce of the current year is expected to continue the development. With the sailings which have been arranged for the next few months it is expected that the total number of vessels reaching the Clyde from these two Empire countries will be 45 for the year, an increase of six over the shipping of 1932. Another record in the homeward trade from Australia with Glasgow is practically assured. Already to June 30 there has been an increase in shipping over last year of 31 vessels into the Clyde against 27. An important feature in connection with this shipping is the further increase in refrigerated vessels taking cold storage primary produce to the Clyde. For the first half of last year these totalled 1 1, but this year no fewer than 1 5 such vessels have arrived, all with good cargoes. Similarly, with New Zealand the year promises to establish a new record. Prior to four years ago, the average shipping into Glasgow from New Zealand was approximately 15 vessels, taking 15,000 tons of cargo per annum. Last year there was an increase of 25 vessels, taking 26,000 tens of cargo, practically all meat, butter, cheese, and fruit. The first half of this year has shown a still further increase, 1 5 vessels having arrived in the six months, taking 21.000 tons of cargo, being two more vessels and nearly 8000 tons more goods than in the corresponding period oi last year. It is anticipated that this increased trade will be more than maintained in the second half of the year.. Mr. Harold M. Ford, commercial manager of the Clyde Trust, states that a large proportion of this increase in trade with Australia is the result of new business being opened up between the producing interests of that country and traders and merchants in Scotland, and he anticipates a still further increase in cargoes. He added that 45 new business connections have been opened un through the medium of the Clyde Trust with Australia and New Zealand in the last four years following upon Mr Ford's tour of those Doininirrs in 1928-29, and it is his view that there is still a vast field for further development with both countries. ■ -
