Boots for Unemployed

MANUFACTURERS' VIEWPOINT Press Association. —Copyright. Wellington, May 11. The New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation's executive to-day discussed the action of the Unemployment Board in inviting tenders for the supply of boots and clothing for the unemployed, but the decision arrived at was not disclosed. Plans were finalised for the presentation of the manufacturers' case before the Tariff Commission. The executive accepted an invitation from the Importers' Federation to a joint conference to discuss tariff and other matters. Representatives from the four centres reported that progress was being made in bringing together firms engaged in the same branch of industry. The degree of co-ordination which had been achieved was unprecedented. It was agreed that the manufacturers were facing the tariff inquiry confident that in the majority of cases the present measure of protection granted them could be fully justified on the principles embodied in the Ottawa agreement and from other points of view.
