A general strike beginning at midnight, j aiming at the overthrow of the Govern- i men! in conjunction with a rising led , by army chiefs resulted in serious dis- j orders throughout the country. During a collision between police and j Reds at Madrid a woman produced a j bomb from a basket and hurled it at j the combatants, killing a policeman and j a Red and wounding five, including her- j self. j A bomb exploded in a tramway depot j and injured five. Six were killed and ; many wounded in lighting in the pro- I vinces. The strike failed in Barcelona and was i only partly successful in Madrid. The Government's promptitude in arresting j hundreds of suspects, including twelve j staff officers, last night prevented the j staging of a coup de'etat. Twenty bomb explosions occurred in j the course of the day. Electric cables ; and water mains were damaged. Many \ rioters were arrested. j
