SEARCH FOR MISSING SCIENTIST

The Swedish explorer Sven Hedin, who is aged 68, is seeking Nanking's permission to lead a mixed Chinese and foreign expedition into Sinkiang to search for Dr. Nils Ambolt, a Swedish scientist who has been missing in the wilds of Central Asia since November. Six months ago Dr. Ambolt lost a caravan of 80 camels during a terrific snowstorm among the mountains of northern Tibet, and was forced to abandon the results of four years' research in addition to a valuable collection of scientific instruments. He then proceeded afoot towards the Cherchen oasis, 400 miles northward of Urumchi, and has not since been heard of. A recent Mohammedan rising at Sinkiang has increased fears for his safety.
