The continuance of the shipping hold-up, even for a short time, will create a serious shortage in Gisborne of some essential food* supplies, notably sugar, potatoes and flour. Merchants had been depending upon the arrival of a shipment of sugar, due by the Tiroa, which was scheduled to leave Auckland yesterday, the crew of which has now been paid off. The announcement to this effect has caused concern locally. The last shipment of flour and potatoes arrived by the Poolta the week before last and already wholesale firms have nearly sold out of potatoes, while flour stocks are reduced to a minimum. The position in regard to both is shaping t'o become acute unless supplies are received within the next few days. The chief hope centres in the Pukeko and Awahou, which, it is reported, may be sailing from Auckland and Wellington respectively.
