ALCOHOLIC POISONING?
WATERSIDER'S DEATH Drank Swill From Rum Casks Press Association—Copyright Timaru, Today. John Patrick Lane, aged 31, a single man, living at 26 Evans Street, who was one of a party of watersiders engaged in loading the motor-vessel Taranaki last night, was taken home in an unconscious condition and died later, apparently suffering from the effects of alcoholic poisoning as a result, allegedly, of drinking the ' swill of empty rum casks In the hold of the vessel. The casks were consigned to tho Royal Navy, London, and the bungs had been knocked in and apparently swilled round with water. Lane was left on the verandah and a few minutes later was lifted inside, but on the arrival of a doctor, he wan dead. Five or six other men suffered illeffects after consuming similar liquor and received medical attention. The doctor who attended the dead %mn is unable to give a certificate of death and an inquest will be held.
