Alleged Bookmaking

CASE AGAINST D. SISARICH POLICE EVIDENCE CONTINUED " 'Whip Lash' and Salts" TELEPHONE CONVERSATIONS A charge of bookmaking and two charges of keeping a common gaining house preferred against Dominic Sisnrich, restaurant keeper, Broadway, Stratford, the hearing of which was commenced at the last sitting of the Stratford Magistrate's Court oil April 3 was continued today before Mr. W. H. Woodward S.M.

The offences were alleged to have been committed on March 8 (bookmaking and keeping a common gaming house) and March IS (keeping a common gaining house). On March IS the police carried out a raid and arrested Sisarich, on warrant following a search of his premises. At the last silting of the court Sisarich pleaded not guilty to the charge of bookmaking, and elected to be dealt with by a jury. On the an plication of counsel (Mr. A. Coleman) tho two charges of keeping a common gaming house were adjourned for hearing pending developments on the major charge. Detective A. B. Mciklejohn conducted the case for the police. The evidence of Sergeant Kelly, the last witness at the previous sitting. was confirmed. The arrest of Sisarich was therein related.

Constable W. Hughes said that at 3.30 p.m. on March 18 he accompanied Sergeant Kelly to the Britannia restaurant in Broadway. At the back ho met Sisaricb, who was informed that, the police had a search warrant. In the office a sports guide was found. It was open at the Wellington acceptances, and each race was marked with the winners up to and including the fifth race. Scratchings were mar ked up to the sixth race. Left By a Man

Witness corroborated the evidence oi the previous witness in- regard to telephone calls, a large number o which were received over the period of nearly an hour. A message came through'for "Dick" and when witness answered the voie.e said: "That's not Dick speaking. Hooray." At 4.40 another message came through, a male voice slating: Is thai you. Dick? A couple of packets of salts coming. W|liip has been landed. _ _

Detective Meiklejohn (examining): Who is Whip?. . Constable Hughes: "Whip' is ''Whip" Lash, a defendant on a similar charge. The Magistrate: Who were the packets of salts? Constable Hughes: 1 don't know sir. Wii'mess gave details of the office in which the sports guide were found. Detective Meiklejohn produced a certified copy of the conviction of accused for carrying on tin 1 business of a bookmaker at Stratford on December 7, 1931.

Tim defence was reserved. Accused was committed for trial at the Supreme Court on the charge of bookmaking on -March S. The charges of keeping a common gaming house were adjourned till after the Supreme Court trial. Bail was renewed.
