Operations for the Month

REPORT OF THE ENGINEER

The report, of the engineer, Mr. J. W. Spence, to the monthly meeting of the Stratford County Council today stated:

North Riding.—Further quantities of boulders have boon obtained from the Patoa River and dumped on the Barclay Road; these will be crushed, and the metal placed o>i the Pembroke Road. Bitumen spraying lias been carried out on portions of the Stanley, Croydon East, Salisbury Roads and Kent Terrace. One hundred and fiftynine yards of boulders were crushed at the railway depot, the metal being distributed on various roads for maintenance purposes. The edges of the bitumen on the Salisbury Road have, where necessary, been built u'p with shingle. South Riding.—General maintenance work has been carried out on the Mountain, Finnerty, Climio, Warwick nncl Skinner Roads. Fifty chains of the Skinner Road from the Patea. River has been coated with bitumen. A side track has been built up on the Mountain Road, where the entrance to the Climio Road has boon widened. A track has been formed into Mr. Shaw's pronorty on the Flint Road, and the stripping of the shingle face is now being carried out.

East, Riding (Toko). —Throe and a quarter miles of the Tokn and one mile of the Boaconsfield Road have received a coat of bitumen. Metal patching, fern cutting, watertahling. oulvort and inlets and outlets cleaning have been carried out on the Ohura, Auroa, Toko and Standish Roads; on the latter an old wooden culvert has been replaced with a set of 9-inch pipes.

East Riding (Douglas).—A fairly large slip on tho Ohura-Mangaohu Strathrnore took place during tho last heavy rain; this has boon cleared away and the watertables cloned out with the grader. A ditch has b°en cut to straighten the creek outlet from a large pipe culvert, where the ln<=t heavy flood coveredd the road and wa«hod off a considerable amount of blinding. A road planer has been nm over the metal surfaces on botb *Hos of the Strathrnore; tlin?" sur r ae",c w nr o in a very rough state, probably the "-orst in the county. Two days were spent with the planer between the eastern side of the Saddle and the county boundary, a distance of four u tic-., with the result that a most satisfactory surface has been obtained. East Riding (Huiroa).—Six , clays were spent in assisting with the screening of metal at the Wawiri shingle pit, in connection with bitumen, work. Metal patching, watertabling and fern-cutting have been done on the Dougias North. A bad breakaway on the Saddle, Douglas South, has been built- up with a willow breastwork and filled in. The metal on the Mohakau Road was rather badly affected when the stream overflowed on to the road, and considerable patching has been necessary. The creek is very badly blocked with vegetation, and is not caivying anything like the quantity of wahr it should. The ditches on the south-east side of The road have been cleaned out. West Riding.—Repairs have been made to the Upper Rowan Road; several depressions have been evened up with metal and shingle from the Milnaia Road pit. The fern has been cut, the watertables cleaned, both banks at the school entrance have been cut back and the scrub cleared away. The'drains on the Opunakc No. 2, Mauaia, Upper Palmer, Rowan and Finnerty Roads have been attended to, and fresh outlets have been opened from three culverts on the Brooks Road. The corner at the junction ol the Brooks and Brecon has been widened and the view generally has been improved. A side track on the Cardiff and also one on the Opunake No. 1 has been repaired. The fern has been cut and the culverts, inlets and outlets have been cleaned on the Warn* gongoro Finnerty, Roald, Poto and Hastings. The plant has been set up on the side of the Wjaingongoro, and a start made with the crushing of the metal for this road; the contractors are making very satisfactory progress with the supply of boulders. Mangaehu Riding. The greater portion of the past period has been occupied in repairing the damage done by the heavy rain in the early part- the probable cost of this extra work can be put down at £IOO. Most of the troubles have been overcome, although some minor repairs and slips still require attention. It is advisable | to put the grader over most of the roads to clean ou't miles of water-, tables which have been badly filled with debris. Slips have been cleared and culverts opened on the Mangaehu Main and North, Puniwhakau and, Taurakawa Roads; two bad breakways have been repaired on the firstnamed, and a considerable amount of shingle patching has been necessary where the surfaces were badly scoured A filling on the Taihore Road was ! badly was 1 /d out, and logs and timber deposited to a height of eight feet The tunnel and drain have been ; cleaned out and a temporary filling has been put in.' One hundred yards of shingle have been spread on the ; Tututawa side of the Mangaotuku Saddle; this has very considerably improved surface. Repairs have, been made to the decking on tho I'll- ; tutawfi Road swingbridge, some rough ; shellrock was placed on the western I approach to improve the slippery stir- j face The Waipapa Stream bridge ; should be completed during next week. The approaches are being formed, and metal will be carted to surface ' Ngatimaru' Riding.—The trader has been run over the M"rfnonpa, Mangamaire, Matau N T orth ; m, Junction East; on the Junction W e*t «nps have been cleared, scrub lv been cut, and the surface run over with the drag-log. The watertables and culverts have been attended to.
