Planer Transforms Road A road planer which was recently introduced into the Stratford County is stated to be a remarkably efficient machine. Spence, said that four miles of road on the Strathmorc saddle had been transformed by the planer despite the fact that no metal was used, lie stated that the machine slices off the uneven parts of the road , nK j \,\-}< the remainder, with the result that a perfectly good surface is ■reuivd at a minimum cost. Councillors also spoke in appreciative terms of the Utility of the machine. The engineer was authorised to make ne-o-otiations for its hire, pending consideration of purchase under the estimates. Tributes to St. John Ambulance "I think it is essential that we should do something for the St. John Ambulance Association," said the chairman of the management committee of the Taranaki Rugby Union (Mr. Jas. McLeod) at last night's meeting. The comment followed on appeal from the Association for financial assistance made by the New Plymouth Division and the Red Cross Division (Hawera). Members paid warm tributes to the work of the Association and the keenness of members. It was stated that practically every ground in Taranaki was "covered" by a member of either division last season, but that the Association had not received any grants from the Union expect a small amount of equipment. It was resolved to grant each division a sum of £3 3s. Indoor Bowls A small Christcliurch syndicate has purchased the skating rink in Tuani Street for conversion into an indoor bowling rink, a prominent howler told a Press reporter. The building has a frontage of 100 ft and is 135 ft deep, and there will he room for eight rinks. The indoor rink will cater for women bowlers as well as men, and run tournaments throughout the winter. There is to' be a card room and a special heating system will add to comfort.
