NORTHERN TERRITORY
DEFENCES MUST BE STRENGTHENED Mr. Parkhill, Postmaster-General of Australia, in a recent speech, expressed the view that the defences of Northern Territory must bo strengthened. He reaffirmed a belief in the successful future of the Northern Territory, but said its industrial and agrarian development should not be a concern of the Government. That the Government had already spent many huge amounts for this purpose, and had failed, was a sufficient proof of that fact. It was a matter for private enterprise under responsible supervision. But vhat was a Government responsibility, Mr. Parkhill emphasised, was the strengthening of the Northern Territory defences. That was a matter of the utmost urgency, and could not be em-, phasised too strongly. In fact, it did not brook a moment's delay. The Rev. James Flynn, who has spent many years in that area, spoke on the Japanese domination of the pearling industry. He suggested also that if one required a map of the Northern Territorial coastal Lne and waters, the best place to look for it would be in the archives of the Japanese Admiralty.
