The death has occurred in London of Mr. Fred Hall, M.P., who was “father” of the British Labour Party. Mr. Laidlaw, of Auckland, who has been visiting Stratford, returned today. Mr. and Mrs. R. 11. Vincent and boys have returned from Ngamotu Beach, where they spent the Easter vacation. A vote of sympathy with Mr. C. Massey (chairman) in his present illness was passed at last night’s meeting of the management committee of the Stratford Football Club. Mrs. A. A. Piper was re-elected president of the Lowgarth branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union at the annual meeting held yesterday. Dr. T. H. A. Valintine, former Dir-ector-General of Health, will be, it is understood, a candidate for the Eltham seat on the Hawcra Hospital Board. The death occurred at his residence, Karori, Wellington, on April 9 of Mr. William Mackay. senior partner in the late firm of S. and W, Mackay, booksellers. Mr. Mackay retired in 1921, after being 40 years in business. He was a noted chess player and a keen gardener. Up to a few weeks of his death he held the position of chairman of the Metropolitan Building and Investment Society. He leaves a widow, three daughters, Mrs. A. E. Taylor, Huiroa, Mrs. L. Matheson, Hawke’s Bay, and Miss A. Mackay, Karori, and two sons, Mr. Blake Mackay. Huiroa, and Dr. A. F. Mackay, of Tam pin, Malaya.

The death is announced of Mr. Harry Dearth, the well-known singer. Mr. Hurry Dearth was one of the best-known of English bass-baritones. He was a choir boy at Westminster Abbey in London, and when his voice broke he developed a very rich bassbaritone voice, which, with the culture of a sound training, was very Useful in concert and oratorio. On ono occasion he toured the world (including New Zealand) and established a fine reputation as a ballad-singer, especially those county dialect songs of England, which he has made famous through the medium of the gramophoue. ’ , ,
