WHAT TESTING SHOWS

Feed Required Per Lb. of Fat.

Some interesting figures relating to the amount of feed consumed by dairy cattle were given by Professor Ivan' McKollip, Ohio Slate University, recently. A group of dairy cows in a certain cow testing association m Ohio averaged 182 pounds of butterfat. They ate 21 pounds of silage, nine pounds of bay, and eight pounds of grain lor each pound of butter-fat produced. Another group in the same association averaged 378 pounds of but torfat. They ate nine pounds of silage, five of hay and six of grain for each pound of butter-fat. Thus the first group ate 41 pounds o! gram and silage while the second group needed only 20 pounds to produce a pound of butter-fat. Testing always reveals a lot that is vastly important to the dairyman. It is the surest way to handle a dairy herd in the most business-like manner.
