RACING PROBLEM

INCIDENT AT HAWERA TROTS Press Association —Copyright. When in the Kaponga Handicap at the Hawera Trotting Club's meeting yesterday the bracket pair Cracker and Raider were hot favourites many investors looked for something else on the place machine in the hope of securing a better dividend. There was much of speculation as to what would happen when the pair ran first and second. A hurried conference of officials was held, and after the regulations had been studied it was decided that the place machine could pay only on the bracket. This would appear to be the only course possible in accordance with paragraph 5 of the special totalisator regulations which read: "The amount of the place pool available for dividend computing purposes shall be divided into as many equal parts as there are horses placed in the dividend bearing places and allotted accordingly, notwithstanding that by reason of any dead-heat the number of such horses may exceed the number of such places. For the purposes of this condition bracketed horses in dividend bearing places shall be counted separately and the amount to be divided among investors on the bracketed horses shall be the sum of the several amounts so allotted to such horses." Nevertheless there were many rather disgruntled punters with tickets on the third horse who considered they should be able to collect as it was pointed out there was a notice on the totalisator to say that there would be two dividends on the place machine and only one had brcn paid. The committee, however, had no option but to act as it did. It is the first occasion this situation has arisen since the introduction of the new system of betting, and the public has had to learn through experience. In the Ohawe Handicap one bettor must have had a thrill. There was a solitary ten shilling ticket on May Dorset, and when Malayn broke six furlongs from home, leaving May Dorset well in front, the holder of the ticket must have been full of feelings. May Dorset was still footing it in good style in front with Kohewah three furlongs from home when she broke and the bettor's hopes "went west." . May Dorset would have paid well over £4OO to win.
