Over 30 Police Take Part in Exciting Man Hunt

Auckland. April 16.—An exciting manhunt following the shooting of Mr. James Pennington Bates, garage proprietor, of Mercer, at 10.30 on Thursday evening resulted in the arrest last night of a youth by Sergeant Moriarty and Constable McLean, of the Franklin police station. The youth was immediately searched, and' wns found to be Unarmed. He at first gave a false name, and was taken to the Hamilton police station. where he is Hated to have admitted his identity He was taken in custody to Auckland, Over 3<' police from Auckland and Hamilton were engaged for 21 hours in the chnso. Every road and bridge between Mercer and Hamilton was patrolled, and all traffic was held up for examination. A number of other young men were stopped, questioned and released on proving their identity.
Auckland, April 17.—T110 yotiug man arrested near Frankton on Saturdny night, Christopher Niven. aged 10, appeared in tthe Police Court today charged that on April 11. at Mercer, he attempted to murder James Pennington Hates, the garage proprietor He was remanded till Monday.
