AFTER 25 YEARS

Hospital Debt Paid

WOMAN'S FINE EXAMPLE

In Christchurch there is a woman, in her late seventies, whose conscience is at last at rest. As the result of careful saving over a period of a quarter of a century, she was this month able to forward to the Auckland Hospital Board the sum of £36, in full settlement for treatment received at the hospital in 1908. In a letter which came before the last meeting of the board the woman asked that her identity should not be made known. For a long time, she said, she had been in indifferent health and had been unable to secure regular work. Then her health had broken down completely. For a number of years she had been provided with a home by the generosity of others, and by careful saving she had managed to collect the £36 necessary to settle the account.

The woman apologised for having kept the board waiting so long for its fees. "I can't tell you how worried I have been over this account," she wrote. The hospital records showed that she had been a patient at the hospital on four occasions during 1908. At the time of her discharge she had paid the sum of £lO as part of her account." "This is a very pleasant surprise,' commented the chairman, Mr. W. Wallace, "and I think we should express our appreciation of the way in which this lady has honoured her debt. She has kept the matter in her mind since 1908. I wish many others would follow her example."
