LORD BLEDISLOE'S APPEAL

New Plymouth Organisation

The appeal made by the GovernorGeneral, Lord Bledisloe, for a relief fund was the .subject of a telegram received by the Mayor of New Plymouth (Mr. H. V. S. Griffiths) on Thursday. Until further definite arrangements can be made the Minister of Employment, the Hon. Adam Hamilton, asked that the Mayor co-operate with other local bodies in the district in receiving, storing and holding donations, with the exception of live-stock, which freezing companies are being asked to accept.

He knew of no local contributions to the Governor-General's fund at present, said the Mayor last night. While he would act in accordance with the suggestions contained in the telegram he hoped that people in the New Plymouth district realised that the Mayor's relief council had been formed to administer local relief, and the council, which embraced all relief organisations in the district, was in need of assistance to meet the requirements of local relief. The Governor-General's appeal was worthy of support, but at the same time he thought people would realise that local requirements should be dealt with before donations were sent to other places. When local relief needs had been met any surplus held by the body administering local relief could be forwarded to other centres. Unless local requirements were dealt with before donations were sent elsewhere it would mean that New Plymouth would eventually have to approach the officials administering the Governor-General's fund for help.
