SOUTHLAND POWER BOARD
Number of Members REDUCTION MOVE FAILS Press Association —Copyright Invercargill, April 11. —An endeavour to have the number of members on the Southland Power Board reduced from 12 to five was made unsuccessfully by Mr. J. T. Carswell at the monthly meeting of the board today. Mr. Carswell rc-opened a matter that was raised two years ago when a special committee set up to report on the proposal returned a finding in favour of its adoption. The recommendation was not put into effect at that time, however, and Mr. Carswell moved to-day that the previous motion to the effect that no action bo taken with regard to the special committee’s finding be rescinded and a “recommendation be made to the Government that the number of members of the board be reduced to five.”
Mr. Carswell said that last year £440 had been paid in administrative costs and : n the previous year £319. Now the board’s functions were largely administrative and he was of opinion that the work could be done just as efficiently at considerably less expense.
After discussion the motion was rejected by six votes to five.
