Euchre Tourneys At a inerting of the committee of the Stratford Fire Brigade last evening it was decided to commence a fortnightly series of euchre tournaments on Wednesday, April 19. In the past these functions have proved most popular with a large section of the community, and the committee is looking forward to similar support this year. Easter Hockey Tourney The following players of the Stratford Hockey Club have been chosen to represent the club in a tournament at Waitara on Easter Monday.—Sharrock, Cutfield, Kendrick, Currie, Adams, Gage, Irwin, Claridge, Jury, McGillivray, W. Slag for Out-back Two special trains arrived at the Stratford station today from New Plymouth. One comprised a big consignment of slag for the eastern districts, the train leaving later for the Toko branch line. The other train carried approximately 100 50ft. power line poles to be used in connection with the power line being erected from Arapuni to Taranaki, where the lino will connect with the sub-station on the East Road, Stratford.

Winter Show Exhibits

The closing date for the butter ;md choose entries for the Stratford i’oultry and Winter Show Association’s show to bo held in. July has been extended from April 15 to Aorii 22. Thus the secretary, Mr. W. F. Boss, will be enabled to circularise factories all over the North Island, allowing intending entrants to prepare and forward their exhibits before the closing date. A. week has also been added to the time allowed for receiving exIrbits at the Moturoa freezing works, the closing date having been extended to May G.

A Popular Library Some facts given to The Post to-day by the librarian at the Stratford Municipal Library, Mr. C. S. Kelly, indicate that the institution is a popular one with a large number of Stratford and district, residents. Mr. Kelly said that for the year ending March 31 the figures showed a slight increase in subscriptions compared with the previous year. He considered it remarkable in view of the strained pockets of the people that the membership had not shown any decrease during the year. It could possibly be ■explained, Mr. Kelly added, by the fact that many people who'could not afford other amusements had taken up reading regularly as a pastime. Relief for Farmers Stating that fishermen had applied for and received a rebate of extra petrol tax because they used benzine to earn their living, Mr. H. E. Blyde, at the annual meeting of the Wharehuia Farmers’ Union cn Monday held that farmers' milking machine should come under the same head. L was pointed out that farmers using benzine motors for securing driving power would be penalised as compared with those using electric motors.

! A Record Established The usual monthly practice of the I Stratford Fire Brigade was held on Victoria Park last night, when-the finals for the Summerfield Cup wore contested. Foreman Cummings’ team emerged the winners, with a total f.jte ->f 74s for the throe events in the competition. Fireman R. Boyd’s team (78s) were second, Fireman D. Butcher’s team (80s) third, and Fireman W. Boyd’s team (84s) fourth. The Winners established a record time for the competition since its inception in 1030. In that year the winning team ran the events in 79 3-5 s (Fireman K. Brocklebank’s team). In 1931 and 1932 I Fireman D. Butcher’s team won with | the times 88s and 84s respectively. Celtic Football Teams Two teams have been entered by the Celtic Football Club in the Kaponga seven-a-side tournament to be held on Easter Saturday. Teams will be chosen from the following players: J. Milk Grading Strong opposition to the Government’s action in making milk grading with differential payments compulsory for all dairy factories was voiced by the president, Mr. B. Richmond, at, the annual meeting of (be Wbarehuia Farmers’ Union on Monday. Mr. Richmond said that be objected to milk grading being imposed on those butter factories which manufacture thenproduct from whole niiik, and he , would not favour the proposal until an. accurate lest had been discovered., Mr M Davis. Midhirst, also spoke on ; the subject and said that butter producers had no common interests with j cheese producers. The latter he contended, did not interfere with the former but in making whey buttei and switching from cheesemaking to biittermaking as they liked the cheese, factories interfered with the butter j producers.
