The Stratford Evening Post With which is Incorporated “THE EGMONT SETTLER.” (Established 1890.) WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1933 Honour for Dr. Doris Gordon.

THE honour done Dr. Doris Gordon by the British College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists is a weli merited one and the people of the whole of New Zealand as well as those of Stratiord will join in extending to the doctor their heartiest congratulations. She has been elected a foundation member of the college in recognition of her great work in 19 30 in which she look the lead in raising i2f),OUO for the endowment or a chair of obstetrics at the Dunedin Medical School. The money was raised in record time, and it is not too much to say 'that Dr. Gordon's accomplishment has few if any equals in :he history of the Dominion, ihe honour now conferred upon irer shows that she is recognised not only in the Dominion but <also in the Old country by the leaders of the medical profession. It is regrettable that the New Zealand Government has not seen fit to recognise the work of Dr. Gordon, and ever since she carried her obstetrical appeal to such a successful issue, there have been many indications of public disappointment that her name was not included in the Honours Lists which have been issued. It is rather distressing to think that honours have been bestowed upon people who have done far less to merit them than Dr. Gordon. ~: , ,....,...... ' ■ • y ( j

it! It is not too late yet,and it is to be hoped that ih'e Government will take a lead from the medical authorities and give honour where it is due. < - 1 •■ i i-'i mj

Stratford should be proud of the fact that a lady of Dr. Gordon's attainments and public spirit dwells among us. Apart from her medical work, she has proved herself to be the possessor of splendid spirit of service, and has brought forward and carried out several worth-while schemes. She was primarily responsible for the development of the Self-Help Club, which movement has spread throughout the Dominion and is now in evidence in most towns from the North Cape to the Bluff. Her work on behalf of the less fortunate section of the community though unostentatious has been most valuable. She has also done much in connection with horticultural matters, and a great number of improvements in our parks and surroundings are due to her efforts.
