THE TIDE TURNS

MIDHIRST DAIRY'S POLICY VINDICATED At about this time last year the .Midhirst Dairy Company was faced with a seemingly impossible problem—whether to continue the manufacture of casein or whether to cease operations on account of the low prices ruling and the possibility of making a loss on the undertaking. The seriousness of the com., pany's plight can well be appreciated when it is remembered that casein at the time was scarcely returning the cost of manufacture. On the other hand, the cessation of casein operations meant the dispersing of the company's efficient staff gathered from all parts of the Dominion, and complete idleness for thousands of pounds worth of plant and machinery.

The annual meeting of the company left the matter in the hands of the directors who, in the face of advice from Mr. Wm. Goodfellow, kept the plant run„ r.ing for a tfTiod of three months and then decided to carry on the manufacture throughout the year.

What has been the result? Today, on the eve of the annual meeting, the Midhirst Dairy Company has sold 500 tons of the previous season's make of casein, the whole of the past season's make, some 450 tons; has pa>o out over the whole season and could have sold further quantities. For the coming season, it is understood, this company hopes to increase its output, to about 600 tons and is hopeful that it will be possible to pay out Jd on the monthly milk cheques.
