DEEP SEA TRAWLER

COMING TO NEW ZEALAND CHATHAM ISLAND FISHERIES A notable addition to the Dominion’s deep-sea fishing fleet will be the big trawler South Sea, which is at present on her way from Hull to New Zealand.

The South Sea, well known at Hull as the Ferriby, was recently purchased by Captain P. J. Dowell on behalf of the South Sea Fishing Company, Lid., and he is bringing the vessel out via the Panama Canal. “The South Sea,” said the chief engineer, Mr. W. Morris, at Hull, recently, “will be the largest trawler fishing in Southern waters, including Australian. This is an entirely new project, for there is no deep-sea fishing from New Zealand at the present time. We carry a crew of about 14. Our boat is about 350 tons gross, 140 ft. long, with a 24ft. beam. She has been completely overhauled during the last few weeks. The fish-hold has been gutted out, reconstructed and insulated. Fish refrigerating machinery has been fitted, and wireless telephony has been installed.” > It is understood that the South Sea will operate principally around the Chatham Islands, where the seas abound with blue cod and other good fish, and that it is the company’s intention greatly to develop the trade in blue cod.
