EGMONT ALPINE CLUB

FANTHAM'S PEAK ASCENT PREPARATIONS SKI SPORTS A party of 20 members of the Mt. Egmont Alpine Club ascended Fantham's Peak on Sunday morning and spent the day ski-ing on the slopes of the crater. Snow conditions both for sport and climbing were excellent and the weather was' beautifully fine, with brilliant sunshine and a cloudless sky. A party of students from Massey College spent the night at Syme Hut and climbed to the summit of Egmont early in the morning. All were enthusiastic concerning the excellent facilities at the hut and the ski ground on Fantham's Peak. During the morning the Hawera party was joined by six members of the Stratford Mountain Club and combined practices were held in preparation for the Egmont Club's ski and Taranaki championship sports to be held next week-end (November 22). Several participants climbed on skis to about 600 feet from the crater and made an exhilarating run down onto Fantham's Peak.

The return trip to Dawson Falls was commenced at 3.30 p.m., a fast glissade from the peak to the scrub line being one of the most enjoyable events of the day. Entries for next week's sports have been received from Wellington, Palmer ston North, Wanganui, New Plymouth, and Stratford, the Mount Egmont Club also being strongly represented. Mr. R. Murie, the New Zealand ski champion, will be a competitor, and it is probable that the New Zealand langlauf champion will also take part. Entries for all events closed yesterday with the sports secretary (Mr. D. C. Ryan).
