A COUNTRY GIRL

NEW PLYMOUTH OPERATIC SOCIETY THE FINAL PRODUCTION The final production of “A Country Girl” by the New Plymouth Operatic Society was given last night to a moderately large audience, and was very successful. Through the absence of Mr. R. N. Renaud, the society had to call on Mr. R. Laurie Cooper to conduct the orchestra. Another replacement was that of Miss Kath Morey, absent with influenza, by Madame Veta Cornwall. The president of the society, Mr. A. M. Mac Diarmid, in thanking the audience for its support, which had helped the society toward balancing its budget, thanked Madame Cornwall and Mr. Cooper for their generous services. Mr. Cooper had been able to take only one rehearsal but the swing of the performance showed the work he had put In and the co-operation of the performers. Mrs. Cornwall, with only 24 hours’ notice, had filled the breach caused by the illness of Miss Morey with the remarkable success the audience had seen. He had memories of playing opposite Mrs. Cornwall in the same part some years ago and it had been delightful to see her back again. Cheers were given for Mrs. Cornwall and Mr. Cooper.
