INFLUX TO ROTORUA

UNEMPLOYED FORESTERS NO WORK AVAILABLE STATE'S POLICY CRITICISED Press Association. —Copyright. ROTORUA, Oct. 5. The Rotorua Unemployment Committee has a grave problem to face in the large influx of men discharged from the State and other forestry camps in the district. It will be impossible to find work for a large number of these men, and the position may become serious. There has been considerable comment upon the action of the Government in subsidising employment by a private company when men are being turned away from the State forests. There may be a perfectly good reason for this action, but the feeling is abroad that if the Government can find money to subsidise a private company men could have been retained upon the State works. Forestry work slackens off at this time of the year, but the question is asked: "If private companies can carry on profitably with assistance, why stop Government works?"
