NAUTILUS DISCOVERS SUBMERGED MOUNTAIN

MAY REVISE SCIENTIFIC OPINIONS (Sun Francisco Examiner's Radio Broadcast.) NEW YORK, Tuesday. The discovery of a submerged mountain in the North Polar seas, a scientific event of the first magnitude, was revealed to-day by the returning explorers from Sir Hubert Wilkins' submarine expedition in the Nautilus. Ray Meyers, chief radio operator on the expedition, told of amazing fathomer readings that showed Sir Hubert and his group that they were over a cape whose summit was scarcely 18 fathoms below the Arctic Ocean's surface. If later expeditions and soundings enable scientists to chart the exact location and perimeter of the mountain, current ideas as to how the solar system was formed may have to be revised. When the sounding was taken, Meyers said, the expedition was within 2't» miles of the North Pole. He declared: "The fathomer which shows ocean depths by » bouncing sound waves off the bottom, has been snowing 2000 fathoms. Suddenly the depth reading showed shallower and shallower wafer, until finally the fat bonier registered only 18 to 25 fathoms."
