Stratford fielded the heavier team in the forward division, but the backs were lighter and slightly superior, although they did not have things all their own way. Hawera held the territorial advantage in the first spell and Stratford in the second, although Hawere, were making determined efforts to score in the last few minutes of play. All the Stratford backs played solid games, McCready probably being the pick of the bunch. P. Fustier, W. Fastier and Lonsdale -were the best of a hard-working pack. The star of the Hawera back line was Edwards, who showed great penetrative power, being equally as solid on defence. He was well supported by Velvin and O’Dea. All the Hawera forwards played solid games against a heavier pack. Aitken scored first for Stratford], breaking away with the ball at toe. P. Fastier’s kick at goal failed B—o. .1 /'■; x

SCHOOLS’ SECOND STRING A curtain-raiser played between the two second teams of the schools resulted in a win for Stratford by six points to three. The game was even and fast, some of the back movements being very bright., Stratford fielded heavier forwards than did Hawera, and it was in this division that their superiority lay. Tries were scored for Stratford by Thompson and Richards. Oppenheim scored for Hawera. The teams were;

Stratford. —Hill; Richardson, McGrath, McCormick; McQarrison, Davis; Nicholls; Cottier, Marx, Eager, Thompson, McCormack, Carryer, Cannon and Richards. Hawera. —Worley; Merrill, Sargeson, Oppenheim; Gray, Duke; Guise; Goodwin, Fearon, Kirkby, Taylor, Derrett, Buist, Harvie and Hayman. Mr. A. »E. Stevens refereed. CARDIFF’S DEFEAT OF STRATFORD Stratford had to call upon four players from their fourth grade team, but played remarkably well against {he heavier Cardiff forwards, and 1 scores were even, six all,- at halftime. Cardiff owed their subsequent rapid accumulation of points to their fast and continuous following up. Early in the game Butcher placed a good penalty goal for Stratford, which was equalised by a try by H. Lehmann after a pretty piece of passing.

Redshaw, beating his opponent, gave the ball to Lehmann, who sent it infield again to Hancock and thence to Spannon, who scored. Bennett’s kid; failed. Stratford attacked with vigour in both divisions, and P. Collins, neatly fielding when a cross kick was returned, sent Tubby racing for the line, the latter passing infield to Collins, who scored. —G —6.

On resumption of play Cardiff were soon swarming about the line. Here M. Sullivan was off-side, and Bennett made no mistake with an easy kick. To H. Lehmann fell the honour of Cardiff’s next try when, attended by Huckstep and Verney, he out-manoeu-vred the Stratford hacks and raced over unopposed with ball at his feet. Bennett added the major points. Cardiff now had a lead of cigh l points, which was presently increased to. 13 when Lehmann and Verney for the second time ran over in a dribbling rush, and Lehmann touched) down. Again Bennett converted, and a few minutes later kicked a fine penalty goal.

Stratford rallied well, especially; after Watson made a remarkable broak-away over more than half the field, and just before time P. Collins potted a goal, leaving the scores: Cardiff, 22; Stratford, 10. Mr. H. Harrison refereed.
