CALM BEFORE THE STORM

PROSPECTS FOR EASTER MILE

(By “Sir

OracL”)

As the racing at Opotiki and the West Coast this week will occasion but little interest, sportsmen will probably appreciate the opportunity to take stock of the situation in preparation for the furore of Easter fixtures.

Sportsmen who witnessed Nightmarch’s victory in the Awapuni Gold Cup last Saturday are unanimous in their opinion that the champion has never been in greater form than at present. Without being extended, Nlghtmarch ran the mile and a-quar-ier in 2.0, and had he been seriously extended, the time would have been something remarkable. It is not generally recognised that Nigh anarch is probably the “king pin” sprinter in the land, as well as ‘ueing the cnampion stayer, so that double speculators will have to accept a short price on his chances of carrying off the Easter "double” at Riccarton.

Having won at each of his four starts, Cadland has proved beyond doubt that he is just about the best open handicap sprinter seen in action this season. Even with the steadier of 9.11 the Fordell representative just strolled home at Awapuni on Monday. At one time it was reckoned that Cadland was greatly overboomed, but he has recently proved his worth beyond any shadow of doubt. This scribe, at any rate, is willing to take his hat off to such a bulldog finisher.

My Own’s form is erratic enough to break most speculators, but the Metropolitan winner must be given credit for a rattling good performance at Awapuni on Monday. A repetition of that gallop should find J. S. McLeod on the winning list at Ellerslie at Easter. Toxeuma went well enough at

Awapuni to suggest that he will be ready to give of his best at Eastertime. It only needs rain to soften the track at Ellerslie, then Toxeuma should make his presence felt.

Havering showed marked improvement at Trentham, his second to Cadland, on the concluding day, being specially impressive. The Taranaki sprinter is another which promises to land a good stake at the coming Ellerslie carnival. Having beaten most of the leading Northern sprinters. Gold Day appears to be luxuriously weighted with only 7.1 in the Easter mile at Ellerslie. That the Te Aroha candidate will take beating is assured, but Gold Day still has the most difficult part to do on the day, and that is to down such proved mllers as Laughing prince, Pegaway and Silvermine, providing this trio all take on the Easter.

If Karapoti remains in the Easter at Ellerslie, one w“&ld tie inclined to consider the race as good as over. However, the stable may rely on Pegaway, as Karapoti has his chances in, the classic events.

Should Otairi accept for the Brighton Hurdles at Ellerslie, then

•he , ante-post favourite does not appear difficult to sort out. Neither the weight nor the distance should trouble Otairi, while for pace on the flat, he seems almost like Nighmarch among a crowd of hacks. But the one horse that appears almost certain to pick up a race at Ellerslie is King March, i Jamieson’s charge was desperately unlucky the first day at Awapuni, and should never have been defeated by Brambietorn. King March should be capable of winning when opposed by leally good open company. As the winner of the Thompson Handicap at Trentham, Silvermine has been leniently fPfihted with 8.9 in the Easter at Ellerslie. Given a fast track, the Hawera candidate should again be right in 'the lighting line, but if rain happens to fall at Ellerslie, it may well be a case of what beats Silvermine will win. Paitonu has taken longer to come back to form this year than was the case last season, but his third to Just an Idea and Paratoo at Awapuni on Monday, points to the Hawera representative again getting on the winning list any time now. There may be a race for Paitonu at the Stratford fixture.

On her splendid showing against Karapoti in the Challenge Stakes Trentham, it looked perfectly safe to mortgage the farm for Lady Quex at Awapuni on Monday. And so it turned out. Ridden most confidently by Roy l|eed, the gallant New Plymouth mare turned up trumps over the six furlongs in time which she could have bettered considerably had it been necessary. Lady Quex claims a nomination in the Easter mile at Ellerslie, and with 9.2 is not overburdened. Judging by the manner in which she battled it right out with Karapoti at the end of seven furlongs at Trentham, Lady Quex should run out an extremely fast mile. it would appear that the connections of the gallant mare have excellent prospects in the Ellerslie mile. v ’* WAIRARAPA HANDICAPS Handicaps for the first day of the Wairarapa Racing Club’s Easter meeting are: Newmarket Handicap, of £175; 6 fur. —Reremoana, 9.0; Riclgemount, 8.9; Freehold, 8.8; Portray, 8.0; Mainly, 8.0; Tenterden, 8.0; Atholspear, 7.13; Hunting Call, 7.13; Kozau 7.9; Lineage, 7.7.
